J.J. Spaun won the 2025 U.S. Open at the challenging Oakmont Country Club, earning the California native his first major career golf victory.

Spaun was the only player to wrap up the tournament under par, finishing at -1. Despite struggling at the start of his final round — carding five bogeys over his first six holes and posting a +2 for the day — he turned things around down the stretch with four birdies on the back nine.

His comeback was capped by a remarkable 64-foot putt on the 18th hole, which ultimately secured him the title, and defeat Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre by two. MacIntyre, who was attempting to become the first left-handed golfer to win the U.S. Open, finished 1-over 281; while Norway’s Viktor Hovland finished third at 2-over 282.

Spaun secured a $4.3 million payout with his 2025 U.S. Open win, earning the largest share of the event’s $21.5 million total purse — a figure that was made public by the USGA before the competition got underway.

The winner’s paycheck and overall purse match the record amounts from last year’s U.S. Open, when Bryson DeChambeau defeated Rory McIlroy by a single stroke at Pinehurst Resort’s Course No. 2 in North Carolina.
