President Donald Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for separate closed-door discussions at the White House on Tuesday. The consecutive Oval Office sessions took place as Washington works to navigate simultaneous geopolitical crises in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Both foreign dignitaries traveled to the American capital to confer on international security strategy while also attending memorial services for the late Sen. Lindsey Graham.
In his sit-down with Zelenskyy, Trump addressed the ongoing diplomatic and defensive efforts regarding Russia’s war in Ukraine. Writing on social media following the encounter, Zelenskyy described the dialogue as constructive, noting that he offered his condolences for Graham’s passing. “The president and I discussed licenses for Patriot interceptor production and several other ideas that could help,” Zelenskyy stated, adding, “We also spoke about diplomacy – it’s important that the diplomatic process be reinvigorated”.
Shortly after Zelenskyy’s departure, Trump met with Netanyahu for roughly 90 minutes. The conversation marked their first direct session since the launch of military operations against Iran earlier this year. Relations between the two administration heads have faced recent friction over regional objectives, including ceasefire efforts in Lebanon and potential U.S. defense sales to Turkey. Following the meeting, Netanyahu publicly characterized the session as “a conversation with full partnership, with mutual support, with an understanding of the common goal of ensuring that Iran does not have nuclear weapons, and other goals as well”.
While independent press access was restricted during both visits, administration officials emphasized that the back-to-back talks aimed to align U.S. strategy with key foreign allies. Summarizing the outcome of the diplomacy, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote on X, “Both meetings were positive and productive!”
