20th Century Studios has released a new 2 1/2-minute trailer for “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the third film in James Cameron‘s “Avatar” series.

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” is the sequel to 2009’s Avatar, and 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water. The trailer shows the return of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family, this time at war with an enemy Na’vi tribe on Pandora.  A message accompanying the preview states that “with ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ James Cameron takes audiences back to Pandora in an immersive new adventure with Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the Sully family.”

Cameron serves as director, and co-wrote the film alongside Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Alongside Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, Bailey Bass, Britain Dalton, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion and Edie Falco will reprise their roles, with Michelle Yeoh, Oona Chaplin and David Thewlis making their debut as new characters.

The first “Avatar” film was released in 2009, and became the highest grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office (it still holds the record with a lifetime gross of over $2.9 billion). “Avatar: The Way of the Water” came out over a decade later in 2022 and grossed $2.3 billion at the box office, surpassing Cameron’s classic film “Titanic” as the third highest grossing film of all time.  Meanwhile, a fourth “Avatar” movie is expected to be released in 2029, with a fifth planned for release in 2031.

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” is set for theatrical release on Dec. 19; see the trailer: HERE.
