Mikaela Shiffrin capped another dominant season by securing her sixth overall World Cup title, tying a long-standing record after fending off a late push from Emma Aicher in the season’s final race.

Heading into the decisive giant slalom, Shiffrin only needed a top-15 finish to lock up the title. Despite sitting 17th after her first run, she delivered a stronger second attempt to finish 11th—enough to clinch the crown even before Aicher completed her final run. The 22-year-old German, who needed a victory and a slip from Shiffrin, ultimately placed 12th after a costly mistake.

When the result became official, Shiffrin dropped to her knees, overcome with emotion, and asked her team, “Are you sure?” Her fiancé, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, stood nearby as she took in the moment.

With the win, the 31-year-old American equals Annemarie Moser-Pröll, who set the benchmark in the 1970s with six overall titles. Shiffrin’s victories have come in waves—three straight from 2017 to 2019, followed by titles in 2022, 2023, and now 2026. She now stands ahead of Lindsey Vonn, who has four, while Marcel Hirscher holds the all-time record with eight.

This latest achievement adds to an already remarkable year. Shiffrin captured her third Olympic gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics, dominating the slalom after a disappointing showing in 2022. She also won nine of the season’s 10 World Cup slalom races and has now amassed a record 110 career World Cup victories—well ahead of Ingemar Stenmark’s 86.

With six overall titles now secured, Shiffrin heads into next season with a chance to stand alone in history—and potentially chase Hirscher’s all-time record.
