Oscar winners Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are officially stepping back into the world of The Mummy, with a new installment from Universal Pictures set to hit theaters on May 19, 2028.

The long-anticipated sequel will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett—the filmmaking duo known as Radio Silence—working from a script by David Coggeshall. While story details are being kept tightly under wraps, the film is expected to continue the franchise’s blend of action, adventure, and supernatural thrills.

Fraser and Weisz will reprise their roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell, the adventurous couple at the heart of the original films. The pair first starred together in the 1999 reboot of The Mummy, which followed a treasure hunter who accidentally unleashes a powerful cursed priest. Its success led to the hit sequel The Mummy Returns, solidifying the franchise as a global box office force. Fraser later returned for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, though Weisz did not appear in that chapter—making her comeback especially notable for longtime fans.

The series, which has generated roughly $1.8 billion worldwide, has remained a key property for Universal since its revival in 1999. Veteran producer Sean Daniel is once again involved, having overseen every major entry in the franchise.

Behind the scenes, enthusiasm for the project is already high. Reflecting on his journey, Coggeshall wrote on X, “If you asked newbie writer me in 1999 what my dream job would be, I would’ve said THE MUMMY. It took a quarter century, but that dream came true,” alongside a media report about the upcoming project. Producer James Vanderbilt echoed the excitement, praising the script and creative team while highlighting the return of the Oscar-winning leads.
