A feature film about legendary rock band Bon Jovi is officially in development, with the news coming after Universal Pictures won a competitive bid to bring the story to theaters. Screenwriter Cody Brotter—known for the upcoming crypto-themed thriller Killing Satoshi starring Pete Davidson and Casey Affleck—has been tapped to write the script. A director and cast have not yet been announced.

The project will explore the group’s journey from small New Jersey venues to international stardom, with access to the band’s music catalog and participation from frontman Jon Bon Jovi.

Bon Jovi – born Jon Bongiovi – grew up in New Jersey and developed a passion for music at a young age, drawing inspiration from bands like The Beatles. As a teenager, he wrote songs and performed locally while trying to break into the industry. He also worked at his cousin’s Power Station recording studio in Manhattan, doing odd jobs while watching major artists such as Aerosmith record. During that time, he recorded early material—including the track that would become “Runaway.” After struggling to attract label attention, the song gained momentum when New York radio station WAPP began playing it, helping launch his career.

Soon after, Jon Bon Jovi formed a band with keyboardist David Bryan, drummer Tico Torres, bassist Alec John Such and guitarist Richie Sambora. Their third album, Slippery When Wet, became the group’s breakthrough, producing smash hits like “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “You Give Love a Bad Name.” The record sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and cemented the band’s status as one of rock’s biggest touring acts.

Across their career, Bon Jovi has sold more than 130 million albums globally and earned induction into both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
