A fresh animated take on Animal Farm is headed to theaters, bringing together a high-profile ensemble of voice talent and a modern approach to the classic tale. Directed by Andy Serkis, the film is scheduled for release on May 1, 2026.

The adaptation revisits George Orwell’s well-known allegory of revolution and power, following a group of farm animals who rise up in pursuit of a fairer life. Their initial unity, however, begins to unravel as leadership shifts and the pigs gradually take control, reshaping the very system they once fought against. The film’s trailer hints at the animals’ grim starting point, as they realize they are being sent to slaughter. This moment sparks their rebellion, setting the stage for a story that blends dark themes with a more accessible tone aimed at younger viewers.

The voice cast features Seth Rogen as the power-hungry pig Napoleon, alongside Woody Harrelson as the devoted horse Boxer and Kieran Culkin as the persuasive Squealer. Laverne Cox voices Snowball, Napoleon’s rival, while Jim Parsons plays a sheep named Carl. Additional cast members include Glenn Close, Steve Buscemi, Kathleen Turner, Gaten Matarazzo, and Iman Vellani, with Serkis also lending his voice to multiple roles.

Serkis explained the intent behind the updated approach, saying, “We wanted to speak directly to an audience we recognize today. There was a fantastic, animated version of Animal Farm in 1954, but that was made for its time. This adaptation is about speaking in the common parlance and vernacular of now. That was reflected in the voice work — encouraging the cast to truly make the characters their own. We wanted it to feel contemporary and to genuinely connect with younger audiences by choosing a language they could relate to.”
